With the anniversary of the Normandy Landing fresh on our minds, there’s no better time to start thinking about spending some time in this beautiful region of France. Breathtaking landscapes, exquisite food, beautiful beaches, and a deep sense of history—what more could you ask for? Whether you’re a repeat visitor or are exploring the area for the first time, you’re bound to find something to fall in love with. Here are 6 reasons to book your flight to Normandy.

You Can Walk Across Water in Normandy…Sort Of
Mont Saint-Michel, the island with a population of 44 (give or take) is situated only 600 meters from land. This means that it is in the unique position of being accessible by foot during low tide. Once the water rises, you’re out of luck. Unless, of course, you have a boat. Mont Saint-Michel is a wonderful day trip and is home to wonderful shops, restaurants, and views. Just be sure to check the tide schedule before you head out.

Their Butter is Legendary
The first thing most people notice about butter from Normandy is how bright it is. The second thing they typically take note of? How amazing it tastes. Butter from Normandy should be a food group in and of itself. It’s rich, flavourful, and elevates the humble baguette onto a whole new plain. Feeling extra indulgent? Sprinkle a little sea salt on top of it and get ready to fall into a delicious dairy coma.

The Beaches are Stunning
You will be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know at least something about the beaches in Normandy. They were where the D-Day landings took place on June 6th, 1944 and carry immense significance to countries across the globe. In addition to being rich with history, they are hauntingly beautiful. It’s hard not to be deeply moved when taking in the scenery or imagining what the landing must have been like 70 years ago.

The Food Is Spectacular
The French know food and Normandy is no exception. Cheese connoisseurs will be delighted to sample the region’s local specialties like Camembert, Brillat-Savarin, and Livarot. They’re amazing on their own or paired with a glass of local apple cider. Looking for something more substantial? Try some moules a la normande, mussels cooked with apples and cream. Notice a theme here? Why not round off your meal with a bourdelot (apples baked in a pastry). Don’t forget to get a brioche for breakfast, after all, they were invented here!

Its Beauty Has Inspired Fine Art
You know you’re in a beautiful place when the landscapes have been painted by the likes of Pissaro, Gaugin, Picasso, and Renoir. Art enthusiasts can explore the region and try to hunt down the areas depicted in their favourite pieces… think of it as a really beautiful scavenger hunt. That being said, if you’d rather just check out the art, there are several museums to visit including the exceptionally lovely Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen.

It Has Some Terrific Markets
No trip to Normandy is complete without a lazy Saturday spent perusing the offerings at the market in Honfleur. In addition to local produce and handcrafted goods, you can pick up fresh-caught fish that’s about as close as you’re going to get to eating straight out of the ocean. Bring home your treasures for your evening meal or take them to a nearby beach for a long, leisurely, and absolutely delicious picnic.
