Why glide indoors when the best skating is outside in the Rockies? Here are our favorites for outdoor skating in the Rocky Mountain West.

Evergreen Lake, Evergreen, CO
The 40 acre Evergreen Lake has over 8 acres of maintained ice. With hockey rinks and free space, this rink is a deal at $7 for adults and $6 for kids. There’s also the Evergreen Lake house for warming up and sipping hot chocolate.

Keystone Lake, Keystone, CO
After skiing all day, why not continue the burn with some night skating? This 5 acre lake has a hockey rink and plenty of room for those triple salchows you’ve been waiting to try. Prices are a bit steep at $12 for adults and $9 for kids but well worth it for all the space you get.

Sun Valley Resort, Sun Valley, ID
One of the few places you can rub elbows with world class and Olympic skaters, this rink is open year round. Where else can you enroll in an outdoor, summer skating class? Admission for skating is $11 for adults and $9 for kids, autographs are free.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise/Banff, Canada
Listed as #1 in CNN Travels “10 most beautiful ice-skating rinks”, the Fairmont Chateau’s Lake Louise rink is on a glacier fed lake and surrounded by snowcapped mountains. The skating is free and so is the ice castle built with blocks of ice from the lake.

Olympic Ice Pavilion, Squaw Valley, CA
Located at the crest of Squaw’s upper mountain this rink, while costing $12 for adults, does require a tram ticket as well. Once up top, the views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains are worth the price of admission.

Curry Village, Yosemite, CA
Started in 1928 when a parking lot flooded and froze, this exquisite site is surrounded by the snowcapped Half Dome and Glacier Point. Besides the amazing views, they offer the warmth of an outdoor fire ring with supplies available nearby for those s’mores you’ve been craving. Adults $10 and kids $9.50.
