Altitude: 9,843 feet
This eight-suite hotel features broad views over 16th Century monastery, Gangtey Goemba and Phobjikha Valley.  The journey from Paro includes a six-hour drive, which is best taken from a chauffeured car. Rooms overlook the hills and meadows of Black Mountain National Park, Bhutan’s largest nature preserve. During the winter months, guests are treated with a stellar scene of black-necked cranes migrating from Tibet.

Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, Peru
Altitude: 7,710 feet

Located in Mesa Verde National Park, the lodge is situated on bluff where ancient Pueblo Indians made their home. The Santa-Fe designed rooms overlook miles of landscape including sites from four states. Bobcat’s mountain lions and wild horses have paid a visit to the hotel’s land. The old 15-mile wagon trail leads to the hotel’s entrance. The trail is steep and features tight switchbacks.
