Top Dream Destination for Americans? Australia

2It is not surprising that the Land Down Under holds a mysterious place in the lives of Americans. I can remember being raised that it was still a wild place, and movies like Rescuers Down Under reinforced that stereotype. A new study from Travel Leaders Group found that, although not as many people are traveling there this year, Australia still remains the number 1 dream destination for international travel. Now that tax returns are coming in (and if you haven’t filed yet, you’d better get on that), it’s time to look at what makes Australia a great place to travel to.

The climate is fairly moderate most of the year, although due to differences in elevation some areas will experience different temperatures than others. Don’t worry about packing an umbrella as the country is one of the driest in the world.

4Short Break Friendly
If you only have a short amount of time to spare on a trip, don’t worry! There are numerous 3-day packages already figured out for you on the official Australia travel website. Traipsing through the outback is the dream of many, but cities like Sydney and Melbourne have a lot to offer as well.

Australians like parties and shows just as much as anyone else, so why not tag along on one of their events? Vivid Sydney is coming up in June which is where they light up the city with eye pleasing lights and musicians of all sorts come out to play. If you’re a fan of the rougher sports, the rugby tour British Lions 2013 will be making it’s way down for the first time in 12 years. As it only comes around down under once every 12 years, this is an event not to be missed.

If you crave diving straight into the outback there’s  myriad of options from The Explorer’s Highway in Southern Australia to Savannah Way in Western Australia.

The Wine
If you happen to enjoy the good times and flavors that can only come from the best cellars, consider trying the different wines there are to be found. Head over to the Yarra Valley, or wander over to Coal River for some cool-climate wines. The Poacher’s Trail is another can’t-miss if you like unique food, good drink, art galleries and studios.

I don’t always save the best for last, but this time I did. The kangaroo has it’s own island, Kangaroo Island, for your visiting pleasure. You can also find sea lions on the sandy beach of Seal Bay.
