7 Places you Need to Take a Road Trip

Getting some friends together, jumping in the car and heading out into the unknown is one of the most adventurous and fun things to do. People from all over the world partake in road trips as an affordable and easy way to explore their surroundings. Here’s a list of some of the best places to take a road trip on this fine planet.

The Great Ocean Road – Australia
Just over 150 miles of gorgeous highway hug the southeastern coast of Australia and makes for one of the most epic spots for a road trip in the world. The famous twelve apostles, which is a group of a dozen limestone rock formations protruding from the coast is one of the most beautiful natural features of Australia and reason enough to take this road trip. If the scenery isn’t enough there’s an abundance of wildlife along the way from whales, seals and dolphins to kangaroos and koalas.

The Icefields Parkway – Canada
In Alberta, Canada lives an incredible stretch of highway through rugged mountain scenery. The Icefields Parkway runs 144 miles and runs through two spectacular national parks. The road parallels the continental divide of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and there are countless lakes and glaciers in the area. There are a large number of places to camp along the highway if you want to venture even further into the great outdoors.

Stelvio Pass – Italy
The highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps is part of the unreal Stelvio Pass roadway in Italy. The mountain scenery is out of this world with jagged peaks dotting the horizon in every direction. One of the biggest appeals of this path is the road itself as it snakes through the mountains with wild, tight turns. Jeremy Clarkson one of the Top Gear presenters described the road as ’15 miles of asphalt spaghetti draped on the Alps.’

Route 66 – United States
In the 1939 John Steinbeck novel ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ Route 66 was refereed to as the ‘Mother Road.’ This world famous highway  runs from Chicago in the middle of the United States all the way to Los Angeles on the western coast. The road runs through a vast array of different scenery from farmland to deserts to mountains. If you’ve got the time, the entirety of the 2,000 mile journey will show you a large portion of the USA.

Hai Van Pass – Vietnam
The Hai Van Pass is part of a twisting road that passes between the cities of Hue and Da Nang. It translates to ‘ocean cloud pass’ and is renowned for it’s amazing scenic beauty. The road twists and turns along the mountainous coast and reaches high altitudes of 3,848 feet. One of the most beautiful roads in Southeast Asia is also one of the most treacherous where consistent fog and high speeds mix for a number of accidents.

The Atlantic Road – Norway
If you choose to partake in a road trip on the Atlantic Road in Norway it may be one of the shortest trips you’ve ever taken. The road is only five miles long and connects a series of small islands. The causeways and bridges are amazing feats of engineering and the rugged views are some of the best in the world that you can see from a road. The story of the incredible road’s construction is almost as wild as the road itself as it survived 12 hurricanes while it was being built.
